213/366: pattern observations

213/366: pattern observations

Spent some time in the studio today and barely got anything done. This summer cold that has gotten hold of me caused periodic sneezing fits that made being as productive as I wanted a serious challenge.

Here, I was taking a break and doing some people watching. Well, not people watching, per se, but checking out the patterns of pedestroams, cars and bicyclists going by.

209/366: adjustment

209/366: adjustment

Had to head to the studio after work to document a few works from 2005. One of my gallerist's clients has some interest in earlier paintings that I don't have digital images of, so I spent a couple of hours tonight working on them.

170/366: cool breezes

Caught some nice breezes outside my studio window as this afternoon's rain shower was ending.

166/366: heaven

166/366: heaven

Biked up to the studio and immediately opened the windows, tossed off the t-shirt and stood in front of the fan for five minutes, at least.

143/366: art break

143/366: art break

I like to get away from what I'm working on in the studio for a few minutes. Sometimes, I'll check out the scene outside the back windows in my studio mate's space. There's not much to see, but the late afternoon light is nice to take in.

128/366: working on it

128/366: working on it

Making progress on a new idea of mine using old photos. I've posted them here. Now, I'm working on taking the idea further by using tape on the surfaces and scouring the open areas-much like the carving process involved in relief printmaking like woodcuts.

I wear the mask to keep from inhaling the dust created when the layers of color on the photos are scrubbed off.

115/366: where to start?

115/366: where to start?

Trying to find my bearings. I'm working on a few different series in the studio so there's always that moment where I'm standing, thinking, "What now?"

108/366: bright skies

108/366: bright skies

First day of being able to sit outside at the studio! My excitement doesn't show here, but I was transfixed by the beauty of the cloudless and seemingly endless blue sky.

81/366: ready

81/366: ready

I've been mistaken for a bike messenger a few times. Mostly when I've been dressed in my studio clothes and have my big blue bag on, like here.

Once, a couple of summers ago, I was leaving Borders Bookstore at Broad & Chestnut when an older man in an equally old suit approached me. He asked me if I was a messenger and seemed really disappointed when I said no. Another time, a bus driver asked me what company I rode for. Don't know what that was about. There were a couple of other times, but I don't remember the particulars.

I wouldn't make a good mesenger anyway, since I stop at red lights and don't like riding between lanes of moving traffic. I have my moments of taking risks in traffic but generally, I opt for safer riding.

My wife said that it was a good thing that she was already in love with me by the time she saw me dressed like this :D

73/366: green day

73/366: green day

Me and something with a lot of green on the wall. Having fun in the studio. Trying out a lot of new things and pushing the chromatic aspect of my work a little these days.

58/366: three of me

58/366: three of me

Took a bunch of shots in the studio today, three of which were the inspiration for this image.

It didn't start off like this, but after looking at the poses, I thought that they belonged together in one shot. I was excited about the prospect of multiple images but my 'shop skills are pretty minimal. So, when I got home, I immediately enlisted the superior photoshopping skills of my wife.

I also shot some video footage of me going from one pose to the other. I haven't done any video stuff in a long time. When I did, I was just starting to learn. I'm going to play around with it and see what I can come up with.

56/366: morning session

56/366: morning session

Getting some work done before returning home, taking a quick shower and going to the other job.

It's good for me to get into the studio before work, even if it's only for a couple of hours, like this morning. No matter how much or little I get done, there's always a sense of satisfaction just having gone. More often than not, I accomplish more than I think I will at the start.
